October 2013 has been an excellent month for live music in northern New Mexico! 10 bands for me so far and at least 5 more to go! October ranged from a big Avett Brothers show in the Albuquerque Kiva Auditorium to a small house concert with Sondra Son-Odeon, a fantastic singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. Throw in Frightened Rabbit, a band from Scotland I've seen twice this year, a couple more Brooklyn bands, Widowspeak and We Are Augustines, Pure Bathing Culture from Portland, and the excellent local band Boris and the Salt Licks -- it's been a great month.
Boris and bandmate Susan Holmes flew off the next weekend to NYC to win a top spot in the international NewSong Singer-Songwriter competition at Lincoln Center! Their CD release party, with the full band, is November 8 in Dixon, NM.
Next up this month is a fantastic show at Sol Santa Fe on Wednesday, October 30 with Laura Marling and Willie Mason. London folk-singer, Laura was last here in New Mexico in March 2012 to open for Andrew Bird at the Lensic. This time she headlines, promoting her summer CD release. She's from London and sounds a bit like a young Joni Mitchell. Willie Mason is a up-and-coming singer-songwriter from New York city
The next night (Halloween 10/31) in Albuquerque is the wildly inventive Cocorosie -- how appropriate! Elements of pop, blues, opera, electronica, and hip hop.
Here's some October music to try out.
