Excellent shows this past week

Last night I braved a hail storm and a slow treacherous drive up "opera hill" to go to Santa Fe to see some hot bands going through town: Those Darlins and Diane Coffee.  Both bands were excellent and both have brand new releases within the last month.

Those Darlins, an indie rock group (Garage Rock sound) from Nashville, has two primary female lead singers: Jessi Zazu & Nikki Kvarnes.  They've been releasing music for over 5 years and their new release, "Blur The Line" came out October 1.

Opening the show was Diane Coffee. Diane Coffee is the new band from Foxygen drummer Shaun Fleming, though Shaun is now out front on guitar. The NY band calls their music Psychedelic Motown, and they too put on a great show! Shaun has great stage presence.  Their first release, "My Friend Fish" dropped a week ago on October 29.

Live in New Mexico - October 2013

October 2013 has been an excellent month for live music in northern New Mexico!  10 bands for me so far and at least 5 more to go!  October ranged from a big Avett Brothers show in the Albuquerque Kiva Auditorium to a small house concert with Sondra Son-Odeon, a fantastic singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. Throw in Frightened Rabbit, a band from Scotland I've seen twice this year, a couple more Brooklyn bands, Widowspeak and We Are Augustines, Pure Bathing Culture from Portland, and the excellent local band Boris and the Salt Licks -- it's been a great month.

Boris and bandmate Susan Holmes flew off the next weekend to NYC to win a top spot in the international NewSong Singer-Songwriter competition at Lincoln Center!  Their CD release party, with the full band, is November 8 in Dixon, NM.

Next up this month is a fantastic show at Sol Santa Fe on Wednesday, October 30 with Laura Marling and Willie Mason.  London folk-singer, Laura was last here in New Mexico in March 2012 to open for Andrew Bird at the Lensic. This time she headlines, promoting her summer CD release.  She's from London and sounds a bit like a young Joni Mitchell.  Willie Mason is a up-and-coming singer-songwriter from New York city

The next night (Halloween 10/31) in Albuquerque is the wildly inventive Cocorosie -- how appropriate!  Elements of pop, blues, opera, electronica, and hip hop.

Here's some October music to try out.

Best of SXSW 2013

Well SXSW 2013 is a wrap!  Five thrilling, but long days (12-18 hours each) of running all over downtown Austin to catch bands at many of the 100 official venues.  Each night I crashed into bed, instantly asleep.

By the numbers:  I saw 75 bands at SXSW this year; Laurie saw somewhat fewer but she also saw some great shows I missed, most notably Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks) & John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival).  Most bands we stayed for full 50 minute sets, some 30 minute sets, and a few we just saw a song or two or three.  I saw 3 bands twice (Frank Turner, Lissie, & Bernhoft), and only 3 bands had I'd ever seen before this week (Frank Turner, Hey Marseilles, & Dawes).

SXSW 2013 Preparation

We're coming down to the wire for SXSW Music 2013.  Ready for an intense week of music and fun.  SX is really three conferences in one (Music, Film, & Interactive).  In SX-speak Interactive refers to digital online emerging technologies. You can buy in to one conference, all three, or any combination of two.  They overlap such that the Interactive part starts first, Music is last, and Film overlaps both.  Laurie and I are "just" doing the Music part.

I've been spending the last three months listening to as many different groups as possible.  All the groups are listed at: schedule.sxsw.com.  This year I've made good use of Spotify to quickly find music from each group, and have been pretty impressed with the depth of Spotify's holdings.  They pretty much have had music from everyone (US or non-US) other than a relative few of the most obscure acts (too new, entirely unreleased, etc.).  I've also relied on others to suggest bands I may have missed in my sweeps, notably: OperationEveryBand, and NPR (TheAustin100).

The conference releases the bands who will be there in waves, week after week.  This starts in December and continues right up to the conference.  A couple weeks before the conference starts they release the "Showcase" details: venues and times for all these bands.  Of course, Showcase details also come out gradually over a couple weeks.  Once the Showcase details are released, Laurie and I decide head-to-head rankings of the (previously identified) "best bands" in each time slot.  We also factor in travel distance to move from venue to venue.  From this we have a plan and backup possibilities.  Lots of backup possibilities is critical because invariably things change!

To keep track of all this I've used Excel spreadsheets, GoogleDocs, SXSW's scheduling system, and sched.org.

Oh, one more thing.  That's just to figure out our evenings!  During the day, SXSW is a full conference, with speakers, keynotes, panels, trade show, etc.  And, from mid-morning to evening there are non-stop parties with many of the same Showcase bands and free food & drinks!  With the addition of a couple radio stations hosting 6am Showcases with some of the best bands, for broadcasting on early morning drive radio, SX's activities run from 6am to 2am!

SXSW13 is only our second event, and we're tying to learn from past experiences.  Last year we found that the best way to have fun was to have a clear plan, but be ready to scrap those when you stumble on something new. One afternoon we dropped our early evening plans (Norah Jones, etc.) when we found out that we could be in the front of the line to see the premier of a music-oriented movie "Big Easy Express" starring "Mumford & Sons", "Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros", and "Old Crow Medicine Show" who got up on stage to perform at the end of the movie!  Seeing this from the 3rd row was spectacular.  "Big Easy Express" went on to win this year's Grammy for such things, and Mumford & Sons won Album of the Year for Babel.  We had many other highlights and detours along the way for a spectacular experience.

This is a test to figure out how blogger might work to keep track of Pictures, Videos, sound clips, and rambling posts for music events such as SXSW.
